Big Changes for Child Abuse Prevention Month in Newfoundland & Labrador

Mar-2022

St. John’s, NL – Miles for Smiles Foundation, a local organization dedicated to the support, awareness, and prevention of child abuse, implemented the province’s first peer support group for adult survivors of child abuse in 2011. Two years later the foundation expanded those
efforts by supporting April’s Child Abuse Prevention Month.

At that time, Ontario was the only other Canadian province promoting a Child Abuse Prevention Month (during October) and with minimal resources. By comparison, many states in the US promoted an outstanding number of annual activities and events and encouraged public engagement during April.

In pursuit of a similar level of awareness in Newfoundland and Labrador, many of the events that were taking place in the United States for the month of April, were adapted for our province.

Since other Canadian provinces are now creating their own Child Abuse Prevention campaigns, Miles for Smiles Foundation has decided to move its awareness strategies from April to October in an attempt to consolidate efforts and increase our national coverage.

There will be social media advertising for Child Abuse Prevention Month in April 2022 but going forward, the bulk of our activities for Newfoundland and Labrador will be scheduled for October.
